The Mount Fuji on a Breezy Clear Day woodblock print (49cm x 33cm), which has incredibly vivid colours, is a superb quality woodblock print which has been crafted in the same style as the original by Katsushika Hokusai. It is from the series 'The 36 Views of Mt. Fuji' and generally regarded as one of Hokusai’s 'best three masterpieces'.
"In fact all over the world people would like to look as beautiful as a full view of Mount Fuji tinted reddish by a morning sun against the clear sky", in the words of a noted Japanese novelist Saneatsu Mushakouji. The novelist is said to have stayed around Lake Kawaguchi for a week for the sole purpose of viewing Mount Fuji tinted as such, but with no avail.
Looking at this picture one could hardly challenge Hokusai's established reputation that he was an Ukiyo-e landscape painter of excellence. Many western painters were quite understandably amazed at Hokusai's unique artistry which finds expression in this painting, and legend has it, that this 'Red Fuji' picture was conducive to the birth of the impressionist painting in France.
