How to Get Good Luck with a Japanese Daruma Doll
Daruma dolls, otherwise known as Dharma dolls, are Japan’s answer to achieving goals. Whether you want to lose weight, get a promotion at work or find love, Daruma dolls are thought to bring good luck and stand as a constant reminder of one’s aspirations. But how did Daruma dolls become so popular in Japan and how do they work?
The History of the Daruma Doll
The Daruma doll’s shape is thought to mimic that of Bodhidharma, the man who brought Zen Buddhism to China and Japan. One of the most famous tales of Bodhidharma concerns his 9 year meditation: during his travels around Asia, Bodhidharma spent just shy of a decade staring at a cave wall in an attempt to perfect the practice of meditation. According to the story, Bodhidharma spent these years caped in red, curled into a ball with eyes widely staring. Modelled on this image, the traditional Daruma doll is limbless, wide-eyed and painted red. More recently, however, Daruma dolls are painted in a myriad of different colours, each thought to help you achieve a specific goal:
Red: luck and fortune
Purple: health and longevity
Yellow: security and protection
Gold: wealth and prosperity
White: love and harmony
The round shape of the Daruma, as well as being evocative of Bodhidharma, is also symbolic of persistence, reminding us to never give up on our goals. Associated with the Japanese proverb ‘fall down seven times, get up eight’, the rounded shape and weighted bottom of the Daruma is specially designed so that, when knocked over, it will return to its original position.
How do Daruma Dolls Work?
When you receive a Daruma doll, it is customary to make a wish and fill in one of its eyes, symbolically giving the doll its soul. Wish made, leave the Daruma doll in a visible place around the house to remind you of your goal. Once you have achieved what you set out to achieve, fill in the Daruma’s second eye as an indication that your wish has come true and your persistence has paid off.
