This 2021 calendar, "The Ukiyo-e of Utamaro," reproduces woodblock prints from Tokugawa era Edo (now Tokyo) depicting women of the Yoshiwara tenderloin district — courtesans, ballad-singing geishas, tea house dancers and waitresses — who were the artist's neighbors and friends. Ukiyo-e means "picture(s) of the floating life" which English-speakers once called "the sporting life." If this is your introduction to Kitagawa Utamaro (c. 1753 - 1806), he influenced the French and American Impressionists and Post-Impressionists, and if you enjoy the work of Toulouse-Lautrec, Gauguin and Mary Cassatt, you should enjoy Utamaro's. You may also enjoy Kenji Mizoguchi's classic film "Utamaro and His Five Women" (1946).

The calendar has seven pages, 13 3/4" x 29 5/8". The ukiyo-e are 12" x 18 1/2", except for the cover page image which is a bit larger. If you want to have the ukiyo-e matted and framed, 18" x 24" would be an appropriate standard frame size.

This is a beautiful calendar, well printed on good quality Japanese paper. Unlike most Japanese calendars, the months and days of the week are printed in English.

The publisher, Todan Co. Ltd., was founded in Tokyo in 1903 as a fan printer. Fans are a seasonal summer business, and Todan began printing calendars to give its presses some employment in winter. Nowadays, calendars are its main stock in trade. I suspect that Todan regards "The Ukiyou-e of Utamaro" as a niche advertising product for Anglo-Japanese and Japanese-American businesses: that would explain why the months and days of the week are printed in English, while the holidays are printed in Japanese. For a modest additional charge, Todan will custom print these calendars with the name and address of your restaurant, gift store, sushi bar, etc. For many years I bought them from J. Toguri Merchantile Co. in Chicago.

Todan ships these calendars tightly rolled in a plastic sleeve. Some merchants unroll the calendars to "relax" them and then repack them, while some don't bother. If you receive a tightly rolled calendar, DO NOT attempt to reverse roll it. Japanese paper will not stand for that. Unroll your calendar on a mattress or rug and weigh it down with books. In a few days it will be ready to hang on your wall.
